The Natural Park called Sierra de las Nieves, was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco.
When we talk about the region of the Sierra de las Nieves, one of the most visited and demanded places for nature tourism is the municipality of Arabic origin, Istán.
In this municipality located only 15 km from the beaches of Marbella, with a surprising natural environment, apart from the entertaining route of the Verde river, the village surprises us with its cosy corners and its fountains, such as the Lavadero de El Chorro, as well as being able to visit several Moorish irrigation ditches. Thanks to all this river wealth, it is also called “Manantial de la Costa del Sol” (Spring of the Costa del Sol).
The sports that can be practised in Istán include canyoning, climbing and hiking. There are six routes for mountain biking and for hiking there are at least ten other routes.
There are several options for hiking in these areas: the valley of the river Verde, the Blanca and Real mountain ranges, the Charco del Canalón, the Cañadas del Infierno and the source of the river Molinos.
In the Concepción reservoir you can go canoeing and fishing, the latter being particularly good for barbel and rainbow trout.
